News from the Pews

Community-Minded: Sharing Jesus not only means being involved in the community where we worship, but also in the community where we live. Pastor Hurst is a member of the Lee-Miles Ministerial Alliance. The alliance sponsors two main events each year: the Easter/Lenten Services and the Summer Olympics, an event where prayer, motivational talks and sporting events are integrated. At the last event, Southeast was present passing out Steps to Christ Youth Edition, as well as school supplies. Pastor Hurst spoke at the April 2009 Lenten Service, an inter-denominational worship service he believes “aids in breaking down barriers and stereotypes.”

Pastor Hurst is also a member of United Pastors in Mission, a forum that allows for fellowship, as well as issues that impact our membership, such as the elec-tion of public officials, passing of legislation and fund-ing opportunities of service programs.

On July 16, Pastor Hurst and several area pastors met with Cardinal Francis Arinze of Nigeria, the black priest from Africa formerly considered for pope following the death of Pope John Paul II. Details on the out-come of this meeting will be featured in the next issue of Southeast Spirit.
