Are You New

We believe that God has a specific purpose every time we gather together, whether at church services or even here on our website. What do you think of when you hear the word “church? Stuffy: out-of-date, judgmental, and irrelevant? We are a church for people like you – people looking for answers and a purpose in life.

Statistics say that up to two-thirds of people looking for a church check out a church’s web site as a first step. If you are new to Southeast, or to our website, this website can give you information that may help you make your decision. If you like what you see, we hope you will take the opportunity to join us some weekend in the future.

You have noticed by our logo that Southeast is a FLOW for iMpacT community. We are very committed to experiencing God in new and life-giving ways. We exists to create an environment where people can:

- Connect through Fellowship. We want to get to know you.

- Mature through Learning. We learn more about Jesus and how to live victoriously

- Share God through Outreach. We share the love of Jesus and impact our community.

- Experience God through Worship. We praise God and thank Him for who He is.

It is our understanding that this faith journey is better travelled in a community rather than alone.

Meet Our First Lady

Dr. Carolyn Henry Hurst was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up on the beautiful islands of St. Croix & Puerto Rico. She is the eldest of five children born to Dr. Lloyd and Carolyn Henry. She is a graduate of Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) in Huntsville, Alabama and The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.

On June 1, 1986, Carolyn married Jerome M. Hurst of Cincinnati, Ohio. The Lord has blessed their 22-year union with two terrific daughters – JéVern and JéRie. The Hurst’s reside in Cleveland, Ohio where her husband is the Senior Pastor of the Southeast Seventh-day Adventist Church on Tarkington and Lee.

Dr. Hurst is an educator, a freelance writer, and an international bilingual speaker. She has been a frequent guest contributor for Message Magazine, an inspirational Christian publication, and has written five devotionals.

Dr. Hurst is also the founder of Going GodWard Ministries. Its mission is to share the extravagant love of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and disciple others to do the same. Through this ministry, souls are pointed to Christ during Holy Spirit-led and Holy Spirit-filled events such as One Night With the King…in His Sanctuary, Intimate Moments With God, Prayers that Soar, and the annual Women of the Word Conference.

One of Dr. Hurst’s favorite Bible verses is Psalms 77:14, which states, “You are the God of miracles and wonders. You still demonstrate your awesome power!” Dr. Hurst daily looks for God’s wonder-working power in the form of the Holy Spirit to manifest Himself in her life and in the lives of those all around her. Wherever she goes, it is Dr. Hurst’s desire that Jesus Christ be seen, heard, felt, and magnified so that lives can be delivered from sin and transformed into God’s glorious image!

Our History

Organize to Evangelize

During the ministry of Pastor Harold L. Cleveland at Glenville Seventh-day Adventist Church, the need to provide a church home for the growing membership of those who lived on the southeast part of Cleveland became apparent. Pastor Cleveland became President of Allegheny West Conference and with God’s guidance his dream became a reality. In May, 1974 Southeast was organized. Sister Ann Robinson said it best when she coined the phrase, “Organize to Evangelize.”

The church rented St. Paul United Methodist Church as their first place of worship. On our first Sabbath at St. Paul there were 119 applications for membership, and by June, 1974, Southeast had a total of 166 charter members. The membership grew so fast that we soon outgrew St. Paul. Aldersgate United Methodist Church assisted Southeast by providing our next temporary church home.

The decision to build the first black Adventist Church in Cleveland was voted by a majority of members in June, 1975. The corner of Tarkington and Lee Road was the selected site. A ground breaking was held on January 9, 1977.

Pastor Donald L. Burden, with God’s inspiration and support from the members of Southeast, brought the dream of mortgage burning to fruition on May 20, 1995.
